it’s incredibly hard saying goodbye to an old friend like ROSLYN HIGH SCHOOL….for years, the vikings have been a big part of the LAKE REGION CONFERENCE….for years, my LANGFORD LIONS battled the ROSLYN VIKINGS on the court, on the field, in the classrooms, and elsewhere………and any time an old friend has to go, it hurts you in the heart.
i have many many fond memories of RHS….ROSLYN was LANGFORD’S biggest rivalry when i was in school, just because of the closeness of the communities. but as friends, we all got a long fine. we knew each other, said “hi” when we saw each other, and spent time together at cool places like PIERPONT LAKE and THE RAINBOW….(DON’T ASK)….
i can remember many many classic battles between LANGFORD AND ROSLYN back in the day. when JEANNIE AND I were married, my best friend JASON OSBORNE was singing at our wedding, and at one point noticed JEANNIE’S brother MARK standing there. JASON said, ” is that MARK? man, i hated that guy when he played football for ROSLYN…he was so mean and vicious, but we always had great games.” that was 15 years after we graduated. memories like that will last a lifetime.
obviously, my greatest memory ever of ROSLYN HIGH SCHOOL is watching my beautiful soulmate play basketball with the vikings….
that’s her with the ball….(and crazy enough, an ex girlfriend standing beside her…what’s the chance?)
and this is my little ROSLYN VIKING in one of her many basketball photos…she’s number 31…..
i also have many other memories too numerous to mention, including the remaining class of 1984 seniors coming to my house in aberdeen while the rest of the class was in WASHINGTON,D.C…..(I’M STILL IN THERAPY FROM THAT.)
and so, this weekend, we say a loving goodbye to an old friend…..JEANNIE AND I will be there as the ceremony is held to close the doors one last time…..tears will flow……hugs will happen….smiles will be abound as well……as we gather together one last time to share memories and hopefully sing the school song one last time……
ROSLYN HIGH SCHOOL….WE LOVE YOU AND WE WILL MISS YOU…..THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES….THANKS FOR THE GOOD TIMES….AND MOST OF ALL, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME ONE OF YOUR OWN……..
